The caption card gives the subject as "Brocco & Berthet," but the question mark and the note that the title comes from unverified data mean even the names need checking. The negative is dated November 7, 1912, and comes from the Bain News Service, the New York photo agency that George Grantham Bain built into one of the busiest news-picture operations of the early twentieth century. Bain's photographers worked on glass plates like this one, which gave sharp detail and could be printed quickly for newspapers and magazines, so the image also shows the working methods of its time.
