A glass negative dated December 3, 1912, carries the title "Clyde W. Bame," a name the record gives without further biography. The Bain News Service, the New York picture agency George Grantham Bain founded around 1899, supplied newspapers with news photographs, portraits and event pictures, and its negatives were often captioned quickly by hand or on cards. The Library of Congress notes that the title comes from unverified agency data, so the sitter's identity and the occasion should be treated as provisional. The glass plate itself, a fragile format used widely before roll film, preserves the fine detail that made such images useful to editors.
