Few pictures on this board show the ground itself as a site of death, and this sheet does so directly. Its inscription identifies the rise as the hill where Brig. Gen. Stephen H. Weed was killed, a spot the soldiers called the "Slaughter Pen," and it marks a nearby ravine from which Confederate troops were driven by the Third Corps. Alfred R. Waud, a battlefield artist for *Harper's Weekly*, drew it in pencil and white paint on olive-tinted paper, a quick field technique suited to recording a scene soon after the fighting of July 1863.
