Off the French port of Cherbourg on June 19, 1864, the Union sloop-of-war Kearsarge met the Confederate raider Alabama in a battle that lasted roughly an hour before the Alabama sank. The Alabama had captured or burned dozens of Union merchant ships during the war, so its defeat was a major morale boost for the North. This color lithograph, published by L. Prang & Co. of Boston in 1887, is one of many nineteenth-century prints that revisited the engagement for a public eager to remember the naval war.
