Barclay's "Fight, let's go! Join the Navy" was a 1942 recruiting poster, made in the first full year of American involvement in World War II, when the Navy needed large numbers of new sailors after Pearl Harbor. The painted color design, signed by McClelland Barclay as a Naval Reserve artist, shows the sort of confident, glamorous styling he had built as a magazine and fashion illustrator before the war. Wartime posters like this one were meant to be seen quickly on streets, in train stations and in post offices, so their bold colors and short slogans carried the message. The poster is a useful window into how the Navy tried to appeal to young men and to the civilians who would encourage them to enlist.
