Farragut is shown lashed to the rigging of his flagship, USS *Hartford*, as the ship steams past the forts guarding Mobile Bay in August 1864. The Union admiral had himself tied high in the shrouds so he could see over the smoke and watch the fleet's progress, and the image turns that dangerous vantage into its central drama. The chromolithograph was issued by Louis Prang's Boston firm around 1870 or 1871, after a painting by Theodore Kaufman, and it belongs to Prang's series of American color prints. Its date places it shortly after Farragut's death in 1870, when he was remembered as the Union's most celebrated naval commander.
