A mother presents her son to Uncle Sam in this Navy recruiting poster by Charles Dana Gibson, the illustrator best known for the Gibson Girl. Gibson drew it in 1914, more than two years before the United States entered the First World War in April 1917. The record also names the United States Food Administration, a wartime agency, as a sponsor, which suggests the poster was reissued or used later in the conflict. Its pairing of a mother and child with the figure of Uncle Sam shows how recruiters presented military service as a family duty.
