Few places captured wartime travel like Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan, and this 1943 drawing shows its concourse crowded with servicemen and servicewomen beneath a large American flag. During World War II the station was one of the busiest rail hubs in the country, moving troops and civilians to ports, training camps and home. The artist emphasizes the crowd and the flag rather than individual faces, a common approach in wartime imagery meant to suggest national mobilization. The station's 1910 McKim, Mead & White building was demolished in the 1960s, so views like this one preserve its grand interior.
