Charlotte Cushman, one of the most celebrated actresses of her era on both sides of the Atlantic, appears in this half-length daguerreotype turned to the right against a softly vignetted background. Born in 1816, she built her reputation on tragic roles such as Lady Macbeth and, memorably, Romeo, which she played opposite her sister Susan's Juliet. The portrait dates to about 1855, when daguerreotypes were giving way to paper prints, and its plain leather case with a red velvet pad and embossed urn reflects how such keepsakes were once housed and displayed.
