Little survives of this glass negative beyond its caption, which names a "Balloon shop" in Streator, Illinois, under the surname Reifschneider. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, produced the negative. The record notes that the title comes from unverified data on the negative or its caption card. Balloon workshops of that era stitched cloth envelopes by hand and coated them with varnish, and their work supported the exhibition ascensions and public flights that drew crowds to fairs and town events. The place and maker are the main clues here, since no date is recorded.
