New Jersey must fight on" frames the poster's message: the soldiers who died in the war should not have died in vain, and the children who come after them should not be born in vain. The state Department of Health issued it around 1919, when the country was still counting its war dead and the influenza epidemic had recently killed many more. Its appeal joins memory of the fallen to a campaign for maternal and infant health, asking New Jersey residents to protect mothers and babies as a way of honoring the men who were lost. The Memorial Day setting makes that connection clear.
