Riders on horseback fill the composition of this color lithograph, titled "Cavalcade," which places a column of mounted figures in motion across the sheet. The subject of horses and riders was a favorite of printmakers in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when the horse was still central to travel, sport, and the military. Lithography suited such scenes because the artist could draw directly on stone and build up several colors, giving the animals and their gear a lively, painterly surface. Look closely at the rhythm of the procession, which suggests movement as much as a fixed moment in time.
