Few recruiting posters from the Second World War promised the excitement of the cockpit as directly as this one, which urges viewers to "Smack 'em down!" and "Fly with the U.S. Marines." The text is credited to Capt. Vic Guiness of the Marine Corps, and the color lithograph was printed by the Alpha Lithograph Co. of Camden, New Jersey, in 1942. That year, after Pearl Harbor, the Marines were expanding their aviation branch quickly, and posters like this one were meant to draw young men toward flight training as well as the ground forces. The piece shows how the service pitched itself to potential pilots at the start of the war.
