The address in the title, 24 East 23rd Street, places the scene in Manhattan's Flatiron district, a busy commercial neighborhood in 1918. The phrase "Tell That to the Marines" is an old American expression for dismissing a story as too farfetched to believe, and it had been in common use for decades before the war. The date falls in the final year of World War I, when the Marine Corps was growing quickly and its fighting at Belleau Wood that June had made it famous at home. The phrase's teasing tone is worth noticing against that serious wartime backdrop.
