Beneath a fir tree, a small outing unfolds in this watercolor, and its record also places it by the water, so the scene likely joins a shady meal with a waterside setting. The drawing is dated only to a span of roughly 1884 to 1925, a period when eating outdoors grew popular in America, helped by new parks, streetcar lines and railroad excursions that carried city families into the countryside. Artists of the time often portrayed such outings as genteel, sunlit idylls, and the soft washes of watercolor suit dappled shade and open air. The sheet is held by the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division.
