Cupid, the winged boy of Roman myth who fires arrows of love, is shown here taking cover beneath an umbrella, a playful twist on the usual image of him as a mischievous archer. Valentine's cards of the late 19th and early 20th centuries often used such humorous scenes, turning sentiment into a light joke about love's unpredictability. Lovers caught in the rain and sheltering together were a familiar motif, and pairing it with Cupid made the message both affectionate and gently teasing. Notice how the small figure's wings and bow, the cheerful tone and the umbrella's simple shape work together to make the card read at a glance.
