Cupid appears here with a bow and quiver, set among daffodils and a short printed verse, a pairing of flowers and rhyme that was common on late nineteenth and early twentieth century valentines. Cards like this were often sent by hand or slipped under a door, and their sentiments were written to be read aloud or copied out by the sender. Lithographed cards of this kind were produced in large numbers, so the decorative motifs and stock verses reveal as much about popular taste of the period as they do about any single romance. Look closely at the lettering and border, which show how printers balanced sentiment with cheerful ornament.
