A winged cherub with bow and arrow anchors this card, a motif that Valentine's Day makers borrowed from classical mythology, where Cupid, son of Venus, was the god of desire. Greeting cards with printed verses grew popular in the nineteenth century, when inexpensive color lithography let publishers reproduce sentimental scenes in large numbers. Cards like this one were often exchanged by hand, sometimes with a handwritten note inside, and the short verse printed beside the figure offered sentiments people could pass along when words failed them. Its small scale and decorative border show how such cards were meant to be held, read and kept.
