Here a man and woman sit close together in a crowded subway car, a quiet moment of affection set amid the rush of city commuting. George Bellows made the lithograph in 1921, and the stone was printed by his frequent collaborator Bolton Brown, whose name appears on the sheet alongside Bellows's pencil signature. Bellows, a leading member of the Ashcan School, turned again and again to New York's crowds, and the subway, which had opened in 1904, offered him a close, unposed view of ordinary urban life. The thin china paper, typical of lithographs of this period, gives the image a soft, delicate tonal range.
