Titled as the old Philadelphia fire department of about 1850, this print looks back at the volunteer companies that once answered the city's alarms. Through the mid-1800s, Philadelphia's fire companies were largely independent volunteer organizations, and rival companies often raced one another to blazes. The city did not establish a paid, professional department until 1871, so the image records a system that was already giving way when it was made. It was registered for copyright in April 1883, and the catalog card names Theo Leonhardt, though that attribution is unverified.
