The Johnstown Incline was a cable-hauled funicular that carried passengers and freight up the steep slope of Westmont Hill, linking the valley of the Conemaugh River to the high ground above the city. Built after the Johnstown flood of 1889 had shown how valuable a route to the hills could be, it became one of the most distinctive pieces of rail engineering in Pennsylvania. Its cars climbed at angles that ordinary locomotives could never manage, and the view from the top drew visitors for decades. The scene here captures that unusual machinery at work in the city it served.
