This postcard shows an incline, a steep railway that hauled passenger cars up a hillside, usually by cable and counterweight. Inclines were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s in hilly cities and scenic resort areas, where they carried residents and visitors up slopes that stairs or roads made hard to reach. Postcards of such structures were popular during the early twentieth century, when cheap printed cards let travelers send views of local sights home. The card's appeal lies in showing both the engineering of the track and the landscape it climbed.
