Sarah Bernhardt appears here in costume for Hamlet, a male role she took on in the later part of her career, when she was already one of the most famous actresses in Europe. The card was issued by the Lafayette studio, a commercial portrait firm with branches in Dublin and London that sold photographs of stage stars to fans. Cards like this one helped turn performers into collectible celebrities, and the Hamlet pose shows how Bernhardt used male parts to challenge the expectations of her audiences.
