This engraving shows Joan la Pucelle, Joan of Arc, in the moment from Shakespeare's *Henry VI, Part 1* when the spirits she has summoned abandon her. Henry Fuseli, a Royal Academician, designed the composition, and the engraver Lee translated it into a print. It was published in London in 1803 by C. and F. Rivington. Fuseli's dramatic, supernatural scenes from Shakespeare were widely reproduced in this period, and the print shows how contemporary artists looked to the stage and the printed text for subjects of ghostly terror and theatrical intensity.
