A pageant staged by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, with a scene set in Santiago, recalls the 1898 campaign in Cuba, where the Battle of Santiago de Cuba was a decisive Spanish-American War engagement. The VFW grew out of veterans' groups formed around 1899, and its members often used public pageants and parades to honor comrades and keep overseas service in view. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century, made large numbers of such glass negatives for commercial sale. Streaks and blemishes across the plate come from natural deterioration of its original coatings, and they now form part of the negative's physical history.
