The Statue of Liberty rises from Liberty Island in New York Harbor, and this view places it on the water, where ships once carried millions of immigrants past her toward Ellis Island. Dedicated in 1886, the copper statue was a gift from the people of France, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with its iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel. Seen from the harbor, the figure's torch and tablet read as the first sight of America for many arrivals, a meaning that has shaped how the monument is remembered.
