Taken in Washington in early February 1865, this portrait is among the last photographs made of Abraham Lincoln from life, and its title reflects how eagerly it was marketed as his newest likeness. Alexander Gardner, whose studio was on Pennsylvania Avenue, made the sitting only weeks before Lincoln's second inauguration in March. Lincoln was assassinated in April, so the image is often read today as a record of a president worn down by the war. Its plain backdrop and steady, weary gaze help explain why it became one of the most widely reproduced pictures of him.
