Pigeon Cove, a village in the town of Rockport on Massachusetts's Cape Ann, was in 1886 a center of the granite trade that had shaped its shoreline for decades. Quarries cut into the coastal ledges supplied stone for building and harbor work, and the men who worked them, many of them immigrant stonecutters from Scotland, Ireland, and Scandinavia, lived in close-set houses around the quarry edges. Fishing and boatbuilding ran alongside the quarries, and the summer visitors who came by rail and steamer were beginning to make the coast a resort as well as a workplace. Residents of the time would have known the village first by its granite and its harbor, and by the hard, dusty rhythm of quarry work that the town depended on.
