Westford, Massachusetts, in 1886 was a farming and mill town in Middlesex County, about 25 miles northwest of Boston. Its households depended on dairy and small farms, along with the cotton and woolen mills that drew power from the streams running through the outlying villages. Westford Academy, founded in 1792, was among the town's best-known institutions, and its town meetings and school board decided most local questions of taxes, roads, and schooling. Residents of this era would have known Westford first for its village centers, its churches and academy buildings, and the steady comings and goings of mill workers and farm families on the roads to Lowell and Nashua.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Westford, Massachusetts, drawn in 1886. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
