A trained-seal act anchors this chromolithograph, which promises that every feat pictured was actually performed and offers $500 to anyone who can produce a similar one. The poster advertises the combined Forepaugh and Sells Brothers circus, a touring show that competed with the largest American circuses of the 1890s, and credits Captain Woodward as the trainer. Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York printed a great deal of circus poster work in this period, and the cash challenge shows how showmen used bold claims to draw crowds. Animal acts were a staple of the big top, and the bright color and crowded layout reflect the commercial craft of the lithographer.
