Few houses in America are as closely tied to a single legend as the small brick dwelling on Arch Street in Philadelphia, long called the birthplace of Old Glory. Family tradition holds that Betsy Ross, an upholsterer, sewed the first American flag there in 1776 at the request of the Continental Congress, though historians have found little documentary proof. This die-cut card, with flags framing the house, reflects the patriotic enthusiasm of the late 1800s, when the site drew growing crowds of visitors. Cut-paper novelties like this were often sold as souvenirs, turning a disputed story into a lasting emblem of national identity.
