The cover of "The young American schottisch" pairs a dance title with a patriotic-sounding name, and Firth, Pond & Co., a New York music publisher, issued it in 1855. The sheet also lists agents in Albany, Cincinnati, St. Louis and New Orleans, showing how widely such parlor music was sold. The schottisch, a couples dance of central European origin, was a fashionable favorite in American homes of the period. The four-color lithograph was made by Sarony & Co., and its inclusion in a survey of American political prints suggests its imagery carried a patriotic message worth examining.
