Titled simply *Thanksgiving*, this piece belongs to a group of American scenes that show how the holiday was pictured over time. Abraham Lincoln set aside a national day of thanksgiving in 1863, after magazine editor Sarah Josepha Hale had spent years campaigning to make the harvest feast a shared national observance. Pictures of the holiday from this period often focused on family tables, plenty and gratitude, which helped turn a regional custom into a common ritual. Such scenes tend to present the day as warm and domestic, a view that reveals as much about the people who made them as about the meal itself.
