The title alone gives little to go on, so this paragraph stays with the holiday and its setting. Thanksgiving in the United States grew out of harvest festivals and days of thanks held in colonial New England, and it became a national observance after Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a single day of thanksgiving in 1863, during the Civil War. Images from that period and after often tied the holiday to family, the home table and a shared sense of national unity, which is why patriotic imagery so often appears alongside the harvest and the dinner. Looking closely at such pictures, viewers can see how the holiday was used to express gratitude and loyalty at once.
