The title borrows from the Colossus of Rhodes, the bronze statue that once straddled a harbor entrance and was counted among the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. Calling a modern subject its "eighth wonder" was a playful way to claim a new marvel for the present day. The record names the publisher as Peter Smith, a name the New York firm of Nathaniel Currier used on some issues, at 2 Spruce Street. Lithography allowed quick, inexpensive printing in quantity, which made topical prints like this popular with city buyers in the 1840s.
