Golf's roots run deep in Scotland, where the game was being played on links land by the 15th century. Scottish lawmakers worried it distracted men from archery practice, and James II tried to ban it in 1457. The sport later spread across Britain and the United States, and its equipment changed as the gutta-percha ball of the 1840s gave way to the rubber-core ball in the 1900s. Photographs of the game from this era often show how dress, clubs and courses shifted as golf moved from a local pastime to a popular national one.
