The name J. Sewell and the year 1924 are the only identifying details on this glass negative, and the Cleveland title came from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the plate or its sleeve, which have not been independently verified. Glass plates were the standard working medium for commercial photographers of the period, valued for the sharp detail they captured and for how easily they could be printed in quantity. The plate shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coatings, a common condition in negatives of this age, so parts of the image may look faded or marked. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
