The title *Fair Play* gives this chromolithograph its particular angle: a dog subject set in an open landscape, with the name suggesting a theme of sportsmanship or companionship. Chromolithography built up color from a separate stone for each hue, and in the later 1800s it made richly colored images affordable for ordinary homes. Prints like this one were often bought as decorative pictures, and their sentimental treatment of dogs reflects the period's strong affection for these animals as companions and working partners. Look closely at the layered color and the soft transitions in the landscape, which show the care needed to align several stones.
