A brown dog stands alone in an open landscape on this octagonal chromolithograph card, a format that was popular for trade cards and small advertising pieces in the late 1800s. Chromolithography, which layered several color stones to build up a printed image, let printers reproduce painted-looking scenes cheaply and in quantity. Cards like this were often handed out or tucked into packages, so their sentimental animal subjects were meant to be pleasant rather than scientific. The shaped border and the simple, open setting are worth noticing as examples of how commercial printers worked to catch the eye.
