A retriever-type dog trots with a hare in its jaws, and the name "Zip" is set in flowing script across the design. Printed labels like this one were made by chromolithography, a process that layered several color stones or plates to build a bright image, and it was widely used for commercial packaging and advertising from the 1860s into the early 1900s. Sporting scenes of dogs returning with game were popular with buyers of the period, and the name in the artwork suggests the dog was a named favorite, possibly the figure the label was meant to sell with. Labels like this were often thrown away, so surviving examples offer a glimpse of everyday commercial art.
