Titled in French as *Le récit du missionnaire*, this 1885 print stands out on a board of mostly English-language American subjects. Its record notes a U.S. Copyright Office registration, which protected the work and left a dated trace of its publication, but it does not name the artist or describe the scene in detail. Missionary accounts were a popular subject in the nineteenth century, when reports from distant lands circulated in books, periodicals and illustrated sheets for readers eager for news from abroad. Viewers may find it useful to read the image against that wider appetite for travel and mission stories.
