An architectural drawing of a Washington, D.C. building is the subject here, but its catalog date of 1600 cannot be right. The city did not exist then. The federal government chose the site on the Potomac in 1790, the Capitol and White House were built in the years that followed, and the government moved into the city in 1800. Drawings from the early capital, such as those tied to Pierre L'Enfant's 1791 city plan or to the public buildings of the early republic, are worth reading with that timeline in mind. Viewers should treat the printed date as a likely cataloging error rather than evidence of the drawing's age.
