This is the second view in the archive's set of Washington's Unitarian church, so it shows a building that drew more than one photographer's attention. Unitarian congregations in the District date to the nineteenth century, when the capital's churches often reflected the city's mix of civil servants, professionals and longtime residents. Church buildings of this period were usually the work of local architects and builders, and their design choices, such as masonry, window placement and the shape of the entrance, tell you a good deal about the congregation's tastes and resources. Looking closely at the roofline and façade is a good way to see how the building fit into the streetscape around it.
