Few figures in German legend have drawn artists as persistently as Faust, the scholar said to have bargained away his soul for knowledge and power. This 1934 etching by Franklin T. Wood, issued in New York by the Society of American Etchers, is catalogued under a subject heading for reading, a fitting emblem of the learned man at the center of the story. The historical Johann Faust, who died around 1540, became the subject of tales about magic and a pact with the devil, which were fixed in print in a 1587 chapbook and later reshaped by Marlowe and Goethe.
