Harper's Weekly ran this wood engraving of the Brooklyn Academy of Music's exterior in its February 2, 1861 issue, showing the new hall as the city's cultural institution took shape across the East River from Manhattan. The Academy was built to host concerts, lectures and theatrical performances, and its publication in a national illustrated weekly marked it as a civic landmark in its early years. Wood engravings like this one were the main way most readers saw new buildings before photographs became common in print. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1903.
