The caption, "Fifty-fifty, something better than rolling Easter eggs," suggests the children's attention was on a shared treat rather than the traditional egg roll. The photograph was taken at the White House on April 17, 1922, the day of the Easter Egg Roll on the South Lawn, a children's event that had been held there since the 1870s. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that documented Washington life in the 1920s, recorded the scene as part of its spring 1922 coverage of the capital.
