Washington and John Adams are both named as subjects of this engraving, which was printed and sold in New Haven, Connecticut, in August 1799 by Amos Doolittle. Doolittle was a New Haven engraver best known for his views of the battles of Lexington and Concord. By 1799 Washington had retired to Mount Vernon, and Adams was serving as president, so the sheet shows the young republic's first and second presidents as living public figures. Its title, *A New Display of the United States*, reflects the period's taste for printed pictures of national life.
