This c1893 view looks down on Philadelphia from above, a vantage that was still rare in the 1890s, when cameras had to be lifted by balloon or other elevated platforms to get such a wide picture of a city. The catalog lists rivers among its subjects, so the waterways that shaped the city's shipping and industry are likely central to the frame. Philadelphia was then one of the largest cities in the United States, with dense blocks of rowhouses and busy riverfront wharves. The print's copyright notation shows it was registered for protection as a published work, which helps date it to the decade's late years.
