A balding man in a bow tie sits for this portrait, dated 1844, which places it within the first years of the daguerreotype's public life. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper plates, each one a single unique image rather than a print that could be copied, so a sitter of this period usually held still for a long exposure, often several minutes in bright light. The bow tie and the close-cropped, receding hairline are the sort of details that let a viewer read the man's dress and grooming as a snapshot of mid-nineteenth-century fashion. Because the process reversed left and right and was viewed at an angle to catch the light, the surface still looks like a mirror until it is tilted.
