The record gives us little beyond a daguerreotype portrait of a balding man in a dark coat, dated 1844, so the picture rests on its process and period more than on any named sitter. Daguerreotypes were made on silver-plated copper sheets, polished to a mirror and fumed with iodine, producing a single unique image that is viewed at an angle, where the sitter's face can seem to shift between positive and negative. By 1844 the process had been public for only about five years, and portraits like this one, with a plain dark coat and a receding hairline rendered in fine detail, show how quickly studio portraiture spread through European and American cities.
